The annual scholarship banquet was held to honor six outstanding young people in their quest for education. The following students were each awarded $500 scholarships:

Honoring the Legacy of Our Co-Founder, Jessica Ann Moore
Today we honor the life and legacy of our Co-Founder, Jessica Ann Moore, who heroically gave her life for a friend during a senseless shooter. We will continue to carry the torch for a life well-lived and continues to make an impact even after death. John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Two Day Summer Youth Workshop
The Jessica Ann Moore Foundation will conduct a “Two Day Summer Youth Workshop” on August 7 – 8, 2018 at the Jessica A. Moore Community Center, 408 School Street, Waverly, VA 23890 from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm. Ages 7-17 are welcome. This is a free event and open to the public. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks will be provided. Transportation is not available. Groups are welcome.

Registration is required. Registration will be held July 1 – 25, 2018 at the Jessica A. Moore Community Center or download the registration form online.

2016 Jessica Ann Moore Scholarship Banquet
The 2016 Jessica Ann Moore Scholarship banquet was held on May 21, 2016 at the Lee Club, Fort Lee, Virginia. We were honored to have Jalesa Taylor, alumni of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and cousin of Jessica Ann Moore as the guest speaker. We honored five young academic superstars from our community for their exceptional academic achievements. Two additional scholarships were added to the scholarship program this year, Olivia Taylor Shcolarship and the Kiimorah K. White Scholarship.

The 2016 Scholarship Recipients are:

Alexis Monique Meade – Jessica A. Moore Scholarship
Alexis is the daughter of Penica and Antonio Proiser and a senior at Prince George High School, Prince George, Virginia. Alexis will be attending Virginia Wesleyan College, Norfolk, Virginia in the fall majoring in Criminal Justice.

Alexis has a 3.38 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Maria Lydia Rogers – Jessica A. Moore Scholarship
Mariah is the daughter of SFC Janice Barnett and a senior at Prince George High School, Prince George, Virginia. Mariah will be attending George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia in the fall majoring in Nursing and Music.

Mariah has a 4.49 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Karl Devan Jones, Jr – Kiimorah K. White Scholarship
Karl Devan Jones, Jr is the son of Sherri B. and Karl Jones, Sr. and a senior at Prince George High School, Prince George, Virginia. Karl will be attending Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York in the fall majoring in Pre-Med.

Karl has a 4.03 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Taleah Ampy – Olivia Taylor Scholarship
Taleah Ampy is the daughter of Annette and Thomas Ampy and a senior at the Governor School, Petersburg, Virginia. Taleah will be attending Longwood University, Farmville, Virginia in the fall majoring in Business Administration and Human Resources.

Taleah has a 3.62 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Steven Terris Thomas, Jr. – George L. Taylor Scholarship
Steven Terris Thomas, Jr. is the son of April and Steven Thomas, Sr. and a senior at Sussex Central High School, Sussex, Virginia. Steven will be attending Virginia State University, Petersburg, Virginia in the fall majoring in Mass Communications.

Steven has a 3.60 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Christopher Riley Rakes -Jessica A. Moore Scholarship

Christopher is the son of Kirby and Jamie Rakes and a senior at Prince George High School, Prince George, Virginia. Christopher will be attending Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia in the fall majoring in Engineering and a member of the Corps of Cadets.

Christopher has a 4.56 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Ebonee’ Inez Byrd – George L. Taylor Scholarship

Ebonee’ is the daughter of Laura Byrd and a senior at Sussex Central High School, Sussex, Virginia. Ebonee’ will be attending Virginia Union University, Richmond, Virginia in the fall majoring in Biology.

Ebonee’ as a 3.58 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Guest speaker will be Domonique Richardson, Virginia Union University Alumni.

Domonique is a native of Sussex County, Virginia. She graduated salutatorian of her class at Sussex Central High School in 2010. With the generous help of many scholarships including the George Taylor Scholarship, Domonique was able to attend Virginia Union University, a Christian affiliated institution. She majored in Social Work to pursue her dream of helping others. Throughout her time spent at the University, Domonique participated in activities such as the University Choir, Women of Elegance, Resident Assistants, The Social Work Club, and Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society. She has made the Dean’s List every year she attended. With an internship at Richmond Department of Social Services, Domonique utilized her social work skills and acted as a case worker for her clients. This internship guided her in the direction of aspiring to help foster care youth in the future. Domonique graduated Virginia Union University on May 10, 2014. She will be attending Norfolk State University in the fall in pursuit of her Master’s Degree in Social Work. All in all, Domonique’s ultimate goal is making her family proud.

The third annual Jessica A. Moore Scholarship banquet was held at The Lee Club, Fort Lee, Virginia at 6:00 pm. We were privileged to have Ms. Stephanie Henderson, a Christopher Newport University Alumni, as our guest speaker. Ms. Henderson represented CNU well with an inspiring and encouraging speech that I’m sure everyone found some food for thought. We honored our well deserved local academic superstars, Conner Ricard, Chloe Alexander and Da’Shaun Gay.

Da’Shaun is the son of Danielle and Darren Gay and a senior at Sussex Central High School, Sussex, Virginia. Da’Shaun will be attending Shaw University, Raleigh, North Carolina in the fall majoring in Computer Information Systems.

Da’Shaun has a 3.05 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

The Drop Out to Degree Program Supports ROAR Behavior

The Drop Out to Degree Program is proud to support the Walnut Hill Elementary School’s Tiger Mart. Students earn tiger bucks where they may purchase items of their choice. Tiger bucks are earned by any student exhibiting ROAR (Respect – Organized – Attentive – Responsible) behavior. Board member Annie Moore heads up this initiative. We were honored to have Ms. Canisha Cierra Turner as the guest speaker, a well accomplished young lady that exuberates the same passion for achievements that Jessica held. Scholarships were awarded to three well deserving local students striving to achieve their dreams. There were nearly 100 in attendance to help us honor Jessica and the well deserving students. Joseph is the son of Michael and Judy Harrell and a senior at Sussex Central High School, Sussex, VA. Joseph will be attending Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA in the fall majoring in Cinema/Screenwriting.

Joseph has a 3.83 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Kierra LaTresa Cooper – Jessica A. Moore Scholarship Read Her Essay

Kierra is the daughter of Steven and Joyce Cooper and a senior at Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology, Petersburg, VA. Kierra will be attending North Carolina A&T University, Greensboro, NC in the fall majoring in Engineering.

Kierra has a 3.32 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Tynique Ni’Chelle Hines – George L. Taylor Scholarship Read Her Essay

Tynique Ni’Chelle Hines is receiving the George L. Taylor Scholarship, under the Concern Citizens of the 75th District. Tynique is the daughter of Nicole Hines and a senior at Sussex Central High School, Sussex, VA. Tynique will be attending Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA in the fall majoring in Criminal Justice.

Tynique has a 2.91 grade point average on a 4.00 grading scale.

Latasha M. Richardson, Sussex Central High School was awarded the 2011 George L. Taylor scholarship. Latasha is the daughter of Debbie Richardson. She has a 3.29 grade point average and will be attending Virginia State University this fall majoring in Psychology.

Rawn A. Boulden, Dinwiddie High School was awarded the 2011 Jessica A. Moore scholarship. Rawn is the son of Robin Pelt. Rawn has a 3.79 grade point average and will be attending Old Dominion University this fall majoring in Aeronautical Engineering.

Jasmine Deloatche, Sussex Central High School was awarded the 2011 Jessica A. Moore scholarship. Jasmine is the daughter of Mr. Childuverry Key and Mrs. Marcia Key. Jasmine has a 3.89 grade point average and will be attending Virginia State University this fall majoring in Accounting.

Mourning the loss of co-founder Jessica A. Moore who was tragically killed on September 25, 2010 in a senseless crime while attending a fraternity party in East Orange, NJ where she was an honors student at Seton Hall University.
